On the 15th and 16th of January, Ofsted carried out a Section 5 inspection of the PRU. With less than 24 hours' advance notice, two inspectors visited us for two days. Their main purpose was to scrutinise our work, testing the judgements of our self-evaluation statement (SES) against evidence found; in their observations, in conversations with staff and students and in our data and other requested information.

Ofsted grade schools and PRUs in four categories and then give a grade for 'overall effectiveness', using a four-point scale: Outstanding (1), Good (2), Requires Improvement (3) and Inadequate (4).

The PRU was graded last month as follows: Achievement of Pupils - 2, Quality of Teaching - 2, Behaviour and Safety of Pupils - 2, Leadership and Management - 2 and Overall Effectiveness - 2.

We are very pleased indeed with this outcome. A 'Good' grade is less easily achieved now than it was three years ago when we were also graded 'Good" (September 2010). The judgements of Ofsted are in line with our own self-evaluation in every category. The areas for improvement identified by Ofsted are all areas that we were aware of and which feature in our PRU Improvement Plan.

I would like to thank very much all staff at the PRU for their efforts before, during and after the inspection and all of our partners who have helped us so much. And finally, a huge thank you to our students who were exceptionally forthcoming and welcoming, so much so that the lead inspector made a special point of expressing his admiration for them.”
